BlogEngine.NET Photo Gallery Project Update

The Photo Gallery addition for BlogEngine.NET is moving forward. We are in the final stages of wrapping up the first release and hope to release it in early January 2008. Here is our list of remaining items:

1. Move all photo settings to the Photo Gallery Control Panel.

2. Write web interface for the Photo Effect extensions.

3. Add option to delete a photo album.

4. Document the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

5. Add photo gallery web pages to the themes that ship with BlogEngine.NET.

6. Create new theme to highlight the features of the Photo Gallery.

7. Invalid the photo cache when Photo Effects are added or changed.

8. And finally, find and fix any remaining bugs.

If you wish to help out, download the latest source code from CodePlex and try it out. The more developers and testers that participate, the better the release will be.

Hi Phil, Is that link points to the code you have for photo gallary? I would like to checkout this project. It would be nice to have this module plugable as seperate module, or  not coupled too tightly into BlogEngine. I think BlogEngine is good as it is simple and fully focused on blog functionality.

I saw someone developed a gallary module in PWS in such a way like just dropping your a photo folder on the site and it becomes an album and controlled through XML.  Storing images in SQL, takes so much space as I see in PWS.

When we first started this project we realized that it was not possible to simply plug into the existing framework. We also realized we did not want to have large amounts of duplicate code. For example, photos and albums can also have their own comments, rates, and RSS feeds. So we made an early design decision to refactor the existing code base and build upon that. We hope to eventually merge our code back into the main BlogEngine.NET branch. This would go a long way into expanding the plug-in surface area interface of the blog engine framework and also help de-couple the Photo Gallery specific code.

Unlike with PWS, users have an option of storing images on the file system or in SQL, independent of where the metadata is stored (in SQL or XML). And unlike PWS, images are not storing at various resolutions in the database.

I would really like to incorporate all your hardwork into a Blog Engine website that I am puting together, my knowledge is a bit limted and I am wonderring how how I can include the source code, by just updating the code files etc I am not to sure how to apply the source code in my Visuakl Web Dev Express. Any advice would be appreciated.

When we get closer to the first release, we'll provide detail instructions. However, to try it out, simply download the sourcecode from CodePlex and create a virtual directory in IIS pointed to the BlogEngine.NET directory. The installation instructions are exactly the same as for the regular BlogEngine.

Hi one thought!

My scenario is probably unique but i'm going to try!

The thing is that to day i have two servers and on the other one i keep my photos but on the other i have my blog. (i have a larger storage on the one that i keep the pictures).

My question is something like this: Will it be possible to change the location of the pictures (not only between SQL or file) to another server (through ftp (that would mean providing user/pass ofcourse))?

Just tried out your Photo Gallery features in the demo and I have to say I am really excited. There's some serious functionality included in this extension, I thought the option to watermark images was quite nice - that's something you're probably still working on. To be able to specify what the watermark should be (creating your own watermark text etc.) would probably be useful as well. Great job so far, this looks like it will be an excellent addition to BlogEngine.NET.

Hi,

Are there any progress on the project ?

Seems like the thing I have been looking for since it hard to use the same images on more than 1 page, if you are not copying the link from the old page.

Also the option for browsing the images, like requested on the codeplex site.

Just talked to the author ... the project is on hold, so we wont see anything new unless they get more time on there hands ... :-(

Well, its still great.

Are there a live demo of the extension somewhere ?
